FYS Information Literacy Resource Guide: Evaluate

Honors students at George Mason University explain scholarly conversations and how students play a part.

This is a participatory, variable lesson frame ready for you to modify to suit your instruction needs. This lesson and it's variations focuses on encouraging students to see themselves as information creators and part of the scholarly conversation and can also variously include conversations about about the scholarly information cycle and/or authority depending on instruction constraints and configuration.

In completing this assignment, students should learn to recognize how the information format can impact how information is presented to the audience

In this assignment, students will match different information sources to their most likely position on the information cycle, and then will consider how that may impact the potential value or use of that source.

The goal of this assignment is to help students consider the value of different information formats for meeting certain types of information needs. Students will recognize that multiple information formats can be valuable sources, but that some may be more appropriate for specific information needs.

For this assignment, students will use lateral reading strategies1 to evaluate the credibility of one or more information sources or, see the alternative option for evaluating academic journal articles.
