This course provides an overview of state and local government by studying the following topics: the structure and functions of state and local governments (e.g., federalism, constitutions, and finance), political behavior (e.g., elections, political parties, and interest groups), institutions (i.e., legislative bodies, executives, courts, and bureaucracy), and public policy (e.g., education, criminal justice, health, and environmental). The course material focuses on the role of state and local governments in American society and how citizens, political elites, and government officials interact to shape public policy. At the end of the semester, students will appreciate the role of state and local governments within American federalism and understand the importance of political participation.
