Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) is a time to honor and celebrate the culture, history, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. September 15th is a special day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua who all gained their independence from Spain in 1821. Mexico gained its independence from Spain on September 16, 1810 and Chile on September 18, 1810.
Established as Hispanic Heritage Week by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, it became Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan.
