Part of your film analysis paper will require you to consider the historical and cultural contexts of both the story in the film and the time period in which the film was made.  It will likely be easier starting in the book catalog for these questions than in the databases, as books and ebooks tend to offer deeper background and cover more topics than a scholarly article, which is usually more focused on one topic or question, might provide.

The Story in the Film

  • What background information would be important to know in order to understand this film better?
  • What topics or ideas or events would help the viewer to “get” this film and its meaning?

Creating the Film

  • What was going on in the culture or in the world more broadly when this movie was made?
  • How is the film critiquing or challenging or posing questions to that culture or to humanity generally?
  • Does the film ask a question and, if so, how does it answer it?
  • Does it seem to push a particular agenda?
