Introduction
From empowering anecdotes of sexual exploration and chemical experimentation to unnerving stories of partner violence and substance abuse, popular song lyrics have delivered sex-and-drug-themed messages to massive audiences for decades. The artists' words move listeners to sing along, oftentimes, without fully considering the importance of the expressed ideas. Lyrics surrounding sex and drugs create valuable opportunities for critical, creative, and reflective consideration. Via discussion and project-based learning, we will work to uncover the contributions we can make to raise awareness of sexual and/or substance issues in our communities.
