If you are interested in a grant from the Federal Government, it is best to speak to a grant agency representative. Often the representative will guide you through the process and/or make you aware of other federal grants that would best fit your needs. Be aware that some federal grants are actually loans.

As a nonprofit organization, you must first register as a nonprofit organization. You will be required to have a Nonprofit Employer Identification Number (EIN) assigned by the IRS.
It is also good practice to have a Dun and Bradstreet Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) for your nonprofit organization in order to apply for grants.

Candid
Candid's data tools on nonprofits, foundations and grants are the most comprehensive in the world. Foundation Center and GuideStar joined forces to become Candid, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS)
Organizations can receive a DUNS number at no cost. The information needed to request a DUNS number is very minimal.
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Nonprofit Resources
The IRS provides helpful information about points of intersection between tax-exempt organizations and the IRS.
SAM.gov
The System for Award Management (SAM) is a government-wide registry for vendors doing business with the Federal government, and SAM registration requires annual renewal. SAM centralizes information about grant recipients and also provides a central location for grant recipients to change organizational information.
