Library 101: Interlibrary Loan

Important Update about OhioLINK Borrowing

Dear Students, Faculty, Administrators, and Staff,

We recognize that it has been more difficult this year to get library materials delivered in a timely manner, causing both frustration and inconvenience. Because of these ongoing delivery issues, UMU Libraries, along with the other academic and public libraries in Ohio, will be changing our delivery provider.

There are 2 important points to be aware of as you plan for library borrowing spring semester:

  • Between now and March 10, please request any needed items as early as possible because we anticipate that there will be delays. UMU Libraries staff would be very happy to discuss your needs and help you look for alternate formats or other ways to secure materials, such as using interlibrary loan, which does not rely on this intrastate delivery service.
  • From March 11 through the end of spring term, you will not be able to request material through the OhioLINK Central Catalog. This is necessary to avoid a backlog of materials in the system during the transition.

Beginning April 18, we will return to working with the company who provided delivery prior to July 2021 and are confident that they will be able to deliver your library materials efficiently once again. But as we transition from one company to another, there will be slower than usual delivery times.

We ask for your patience as OhioLINK implements this long-term solution.

In addition, please make use of the assistance that our librarians would be happy to provide. We love to help our students and faculty find the resources they need.

Most types of library material needed for the purposes of study, instruction, information, or research may be requested on loan or in photocopy from another library.

If the item you need is not available at Mount Union, search OPAL (our consortium), then OhioLINK (our statewide academic consortium) or SearchOhio (a public library consortium). Mount Union is part of OPAL, a 27 library catalog consortium that uses the Innovative Interfaces software system. As part of the OhioLINK system, our users may borrow materials directly from all OPAL libraries as well as any of the more than 100 OhioLINK libraries throughout the state of Ohio. SearchOhio gives access to approximately 25 of the largest public libraries in the state.

Items not available from Mount Union, or through OPAL, OhioLINK, and SearchOhio, may be requested through interlibrary loan for free.

It is not feasible for any one library to be self-sufficient, and in the belief that the furtherance of knowledge is in the general interest, interlibrary borrowing and lending is regarded by Mount Union as essential to library service.
